SuperSyncTM Nearline Storage

for Stratus VOS V Series and Continuum

Fiber Model

SuperSync Nearline Storage provides VOS Storage with Enterprise Backup Capability.

Key Features

  • Enables you to back up VOS V Series and Continuum machines on your Enterprise Backup Facility (Tivoli, VERITAS)
  • The internal parity drive keeps your SuperSync™Nearline Storage working in the event of a drive failure. Cache is battery backed, so no I/Os are lost even in a power failure or component-level crash.

SuperSync Nearline Storage

SuperSync Nearline Storage consists of the SuperSync Disk Array running network backup client software. The backup client software recognizes the disk array as raw disk partitions. VOS recognizes the disk array as standard VOS disks.

The SuperSync Nearline Storage is configured to connect to the customer’s network infrastructure allowing the Enterprise Backup Server access to the raw disk partitions residing on the SuperSync Disk Array.

The backup client software recognizes the raw partitions and backs them up as raw disk images, eliminating operating system-specific attributes of the partition.  This allows VOS data to be stored and accessed by the Enterprise Backup Server.

Once the raw disk images are backed up they can be restored at the disk image level to any reserved raw partition selected by the network backup administrator, provided it is the exact size as the original partition. Once restored, the disk images can be accessed as standard VOS disks.

SuperSync Disk Array

The SuperSync Disk Array emulates a tray of VOS disks. Once the SuperSync is connected to the Stratus host and powered up, the disks are set up, initialized, and mounted with the exact commands as standard VOS disks.

DRA installs all software components at the time of installation and any additional components as deemed appropriate thereafter via dial-in telnet/ssh sessions.

Physical Connections

The SuperSync connects directly into a Stratus VOS Continuum via the K480 or JBOD port as shown here;

or into the Stratus VOS V Series via the U528 or JBOD port as shown here:

The Stratus host sees the SuperSync as one or more standard VOS disks.  The VOS addressable capacity is equal to 14 Stratus disks.

VOS D913 and D914 disks are currently supported on SuperSyncs. Stratus no longer sells D913 disks, but the D913 disk type remains in VOS. Therefore, SuperSyncs can be configured as D913s. If SuperSyncs are partnered to SuperSyncs or StorGates, users may choose to use the D913 disk type, depending on their capacity needs. However, for most users it will no longer be practical to partner SuperSyncs to Stratus D913 disks.

The unit is available in a 2U (3.5 in.) chassis.

SuperSync Nearline Storage provides internal redundancy. The SuperSync is configured with a parity drive. If one drive fails, the others keep running. No data or processing time is lost.

SAGE Enterprise Backup

For users who want to automate the management of saves and restores DRA offers SAGE Enterprise Backup.  SAGE integrates the standard VOS save/restore process into a VERITAS or Tivoli enterprise backup solution using SuperSync Nearline Storage. VOS saves are done to "containers" (disk images) on the SuperSync that appear to VOS as logical disk drives. Once the VOS save is complete the SAGE software initiates a VERITAS or Tivoli enterprise backup of the container. Restores are performed in a similar manner.

Product Support

DRA products purchased through Stratus are supported jointly by DRA and Stratus. DRA products purchased directly from DRA are supported through the Co-active Maintenance Service (CMS). CMS is a total support agreement which is available "around the clock, around the world" to participating DRA customers. Product maintenance, product updates, documentation and training are available through CMS support. CMS is provided free of charge for 90 days following product installation, and may be extended by contract thereafter.
