SAGE Enterprise Backup The Premier Enterprise Backup Solution for VOS
Stratus V Series and Continuum VERITAS and Tivoli Access for VOS
DRAs
SAGE Enterprise Backup provides an automated enterprise backup solution for VOS computers using
VOS utilities.
SAGE integrates
the standard VOS save/restore process into a VERITAS or Tivoli enterprise backup
solution, and provides the fastest VOS saves and restores available.
With SAGE, Stratus VOS administrators no longer have to manage VOS save and
restore operations. Key Features Efficiently
and rapidly backs up and restores VOS files using VOS utilities Provides ease of operation Uses simple interface familiar to VOS administrators Limited Impact on the Enterprise SAGE allows VOS personnel to perform standard operations with no ongoing impact on network backup operations personnel. In turn, network backup operations personnel can manage VOS backups and restores without special knowledge of the VOS platform. Reduces Costs SAGE leverages your existing enterprise backup resources to provide the fastest VOS saves and restores available. Users are able to utilize the greater efficiency of enterprise backup while maintaining control of VOS backup and restore policies. Ease of Operation SAGE requires no changes to your application or to VOS, and works with all versions of VOS and IP Stacks. In addition, since SAGE uses VOS Save and Restore it is VOS-like, so there is a near-zero learning curve. There is minimum SAGE training required and no cross-training of VOS and VERITAS or Tivoli administrators. SAGE reduces system administration as no operator intervention is required for scheduled saves. In addition, there are no tapes to be handled, stored, or tracked by VOS administrators. Automation Flexibility SAGE allows for fully-automated, semi-automated, or totally staff-implemented backups. Users can back up and restore as needed. SAGE can manage multiple simultaneous backups as well. SAGE Components SAGE is a collection of software components: The SAGE command-line interface on VOS allows administrators a simple way to schedule saves and restores, and to query the SAGE database. Using SAGE, the system administrator simply schedules a save or restore to run now or in the future, and the SAGE system performs the operation on behalf of the administrator. The scheduler module on VOS (sage_schedule) is primarily responsible for the execution of scheduled saves and restores. The scheduler implements most of the database, scheduler, and control components of the SAGE system. It allows end users to schedule VOS saves on a onetime or recurrent basis. Users can select specific files, directories, or disks to be saved. Restores can also be scheduled with the flexibility to restore files to the same disk from which they came, or to a different disk. The scheduler module manages the mounting and dismounting of disks and the running of the save and restore commands through the use of additional modules when needed. In addition, it instructs the SuperSync modules to run network saves and restores when necessary. The VOS-resident database of files and backups tracks information such as what files are on a given backup, when the backup was created, and when it is to be deleted. It also tracks all saves and restores executed by the SAGE system. All saves and restores in the SAGE system are identified by a common numeric identifier, as well as by the date and time they occurred. The notification module on VOS (sage_notify) is responsible for handling messages returned to VOS from the SuperSync. These messages report the successful completion of a save or restore, or they report any error that may have occurred. It also handles the database updates necessary when the network operation completes. On the SuperSync, the request server module (sage_request_server) handles messages from the VOS modules, starts and monitors network save and restore operations, and returns result status messages to the VOS system. In addition, the monitor process (sage_monitor) checks
that the SAGE software is operating correctly, and logs errors and restarts
processes if necessary. The control process (sage_control) starts and stops the
system, and reports status to the user. Other programs provide database
information for users. The VERITAS or Tivoli Client which offers a single management tool to consolidate all backup and recovery operations. VERITAS and Tivoli automate network backups and back up disk images containing Save Sets to tape. SAGE allows VOS users to take advantage of the following network backup capabilities: Management of VERITAS- and Tivoli-connected devices and media Alerting, reporting, and troubleshooting technologies Off-site media management Data encryption SuperSync Nearline Storage SAGE integrates the standard VOS save/restore process into a VERITAS or Tivoli enterprise backup solution using SuperSync Enterprise Backup. VOS saves are done to "containers" (disk images) on the SuperSync that appear to VOS as logical disk drives. Once the VOS save is complete the SAGE software initiates a VERITAS or Tivoli enterprise backup of the container. Restores are performed in a similar manner. For backups, SAGE on VOS requests a disk on SuperSync be made available, then performs a VOS save. When the VOS save is complete, SAGE directs VERITAS or Tivoli to move the data on the SuperSync to a tape silo or RAID. For a restore, SAGE on VOS requests VERITAS or Tivoli to restore the needed data from the tape silo or RAID to one of the SuperSync shared disks. Then, when the VERITAS or Tivoli restore is complete, SuperSync notifies VOS so it can mount the disk and perform the VOS restore to the desired destination. Product Support SAGE is fully certified by Stratus Technologies. DRA products purchased through Stratus are supported jointly by DRA and Stratus. Product warranty is provided free of charge for 90 days following product installation, and may be extended by contract thereafter.
